Callisto Black Noodles and Peanut Sauce

[No Spoilers] Callisto Black Noodles and Peanut Sauce (Babylon’s Ashes): An Expanse Recipe

As to not spoil the plot up until Babylon’s Ashes (Book 6), this analysis of Callisto Black Noodles and Peanut Sauce will be intentionally vague.  The holes in my writing are so that people who have read this book already will understand the circumstances and those who have not read it will be able to understand the food’s significance when they arrive at this point whether in the show or novels.

“He sat apart, at a bright-pink table with a bowl of living grass as a centerpiece. From there he could watch the oversized wall screens with their scroll of newsfeeds muttering to themselves like angry drunks or else look over the finch-bright girls talking to one another and managing to never glance his way. He ordered black noodles in peanut sauce and a stout from the table display and paid with Free Navy scrip. For a long moment, he thought the table might refuse payment—if it said his money was bad, that would be when the girls looked over at him—but it chimed pleasantly, accepting, and threw up a countdown timer to when his order should come. Twelve minutes. So for twelve minutes, he watched the feeds.”

(Babylon’s Ashes : 36 : Filip)

The Expanse is rife with complex characters.  Individuals in the series often undergo changes good and bad.  They bring about change on their own or are victims of circumstance.

In the quote above, the character Filip has been made to believe that certain actions are the only path to progress.  However, in this scene he is doubting whether or not what he’s done is just. The black noodles and peanut sauce, at the bar on Callisto, express his inner conflict.

The peanut is symbolic of change, birth, health and progress.  Peanut sauce refers to a bright future and one with better personal fortune.  It is a ))) symbol. His choice in noodles indicates the conflicting feelings he has with the actions he’s taken.

This sauce is served on black noodles.  We know that the color black is indicative of dark thoughts, confusion, and pain.

So why would Filip request such a combination?

He is torn and conflicted.  On one side, the actions he’s taken should be celebrated.  They’ve worked, and he is on the path to accomplish bigger things.  However, in this bar on Callisto he is beginning to see that he is potentially wrong: that he’s been lied to, that he’s lying to himself, that maybe he’s on the wrong side.
