On Tycho Station, Blauwe Blome is a bar famous for Golgo tables and a potent cocktail called the Blue Meanie. The bar limits each patron to only two Blue Meanies “due to the drink’s fairly suicidal mixture of ethanol, caffeine, and methylphenidate.” And don’t forget the blue food coloring.
“According to the station directory, the Blauwe Blome was famous for two things: a drink called the Blue Meanie and its large number of Golgo tables. The guidebook warned potential patrons that the station allowed the bar to serve only two Blue Meanies to each customer due to the drink’s fairly suicidal mixture of ethanol, caffeine, and methylphenidate. And, Holden guessed, some kind of blue food coloring.”(Caliban’s War : 34 : Holden)
I had three theories as to the meaning behind its creation and what its name symbolizes, but first we need to know what a Blue Meanie is outside of The Expanse
The Yellow Submarine, an animated fantasy film, was released In 1968. The Beatles were the main protagonists on a mission to save Pepperland. It was beautiful, peaceful, musical, and colorful paradise before being invaded by Blue Meanies: vile creatures who loathed music, happiness, and love.
The Chief Blue Meanie who was the worst of the many types of evil things. These beings simply represented all of the bad in the world.
They invaded and attempted to destroy Pepperland. It is very clear that these Blue Meanies did not belong in Pepperland.
The Yellow Submarine was wild, trippy film. After, a psychedelic mushroom, Panaeolus Cyanescens was given the name Blue Meanie.
These Blue Meanies waged war on pepper land, and represent the awful, uncaring extension of mankind. It’s a pretty trippy and psychedelic journey. The popularity of the film was incredible. A certain type of psychedelic mushroom, Panaeolus Cyanescens.
Why would a strong, blue drink be called a Blue Meanie in Blauwe Blome on Tycho Station?
The Blue Meanie really is: Fred Johnson.
The color blue is associated with 4 things in the Expanse: Earth, The UN, The Protomolecule, and Tycho Station.
It is my belief that the Blue Meanie is meant to represent Fred Johnson: The Butcher of Anderson Station. Once a decorated Colonel of the UN Marine Corp, now OPA “leader” on Tycho Station which logo is blue.
Fred Johnson is in essence a Blue Meanie. He is foreign to the Belt, an invader, who many mistrust for his history, tactics, and views. His ideas and ways are seen as hindrances, instead of helpful. The Blue Meanie drink, therefore, is a jab at Fred. It is a symbol of many Belters distrust, and in many cases hatred.
Like the Blue Meanies in The Yellow Submarine, many Belters and OPA sympathizers fervently believe that Fred Johnson does not belong.
Fred is believed to wrong for the Belt, which is why the Blauwe Blome created a Blue Meanie drink to subtly express their dislike for their current leader.
But I love Fred! He’s a great character, and the Blauwe Blome’s Blue Meanie needs a recipe.
This recipe WILL have alcohol and caffeine, so be mindful and respect the alcohol laws wherever you reside. Also, drink responsibly. This, like all of my recipes, are fictional fictional interpretations.
